Masoud Mardanshahi

Senior OpenGL Developer

I build real-time medical volume renderers — GPU ray marching, cinematic path tracing, and 3D workstation tools — for ZEUS, MiNNOVAA’s imaging workstation.

About

Medical graphics, shipped in a PACS viewer

I am a Senior OpenGL Developer at MiNNOVAA with about eight years in industry and five years dedicated to OpenGL. My work sits at the intersection of DICOM, GPU rendering, and clinical 3D tools: taking CT and MR volumes from slice stacks to interactive, high-quality 3D on Windows workstations.

In Vista, the viewer behind ZEUS, I own the OpenGL 3.3 Core pipeline — from 3D textures and transfer functions to a cinematic path tracer with stochastic free-flight sampling, GGX materials, and HDR environment lighting. The same stack powers production DVR, MPR, volume cut, and bounding-box crop, all without leaving OpenGL 3.3.

Based in Tehran, Iran, and open to relocation. I want to work with teams that ship demanding graphics and recognize the people who build them.

Selected work

Rendering for a clinical workstation

Pipeline from stacked DICOM slices to opaque and translucent 3D skull renders.

GPU Direct Volume Rendering

One-pass ray marching of CT/MR 3D textures with MIP, DVR, and SSD compositing, up to eight masked layers, tricubic sampling, Blinn–Phong lighting, and clinical transfer-function presets. About 10× faster than the previous GDI renderer.

Digital subtraction angiography: contrast vessels isolated from overlapping bone and soft tissue.

Digital Subtraction Angiography

Fo-Dicom to SimpleITK conversion and DSA for XA series. Roughly 2× faster than the prior Leadtools toolkit, which removed an ~$8,000 annual SDK cost.

Interactive 3D MPR

Oblique multiplanar reconstruction inside the live 3D volume: rotatable cross-sections, 2D/3D correlation, bounding-box crop, volume cut, and Camera3D navigation for trauma and surgical planning cases in the PACS viewer.

Experience

Where the work happened

  1. 2021 — Present

    MiNNOVAA

    Senior OpenGL Developer

    • Designed a cinematic GPU volume path tracer for ZEUS: stochastic free-flight sampling, diffuse/GGX response, HDR environment lighting, progressive accumulation, transfer functions, 3D volume textures, and active-tile filtering on OpenGL 3.3 with ObjectTK.
    • Built the production GPU DVR stack: one-pass ray marching, MIP/DVR/SSD, up to eight masked layers, Blinn–Phong shading, tricubic sampling, and transfer-function presets. Real-time 3D of DICOM slices, about 10× faster than GDI.
    • Shipped 3D workstation tools: Camera3D, bounding-box crop, volume cut, layer-box transfer-function editing, and interactive 3D MPR.
    • Integrated OpenTK into ZEUS so 3D data renders on the GPU, and delivered a custom OpenGL camera and renderer that replaced Activiz (.NET VTK).
    • Built Fo-Dicom to SimpleITK conversion and DSA, about 2× faster than Leadtools, saving roughly $8,000 per year in SDK cost.
    • Released Faraabeen, a DICOM viewer that can decrypt Kekishe encrypted studies, keeping that capability inside MiNNOVAA products.
    • Ray-cast volume rendering contributed to more than 20% sales growth in a 90-day period versus the same period the year before.
